The University of Maine Farmington is seeking applicants for the position of Area Director for Student Life.
The Area Director will report to the Assistant Director of Student Life.
The Area Director will oversee five residence halls (Mallett, Purington, Stone, Dakin and FAB) consisting of up to 596 residents. The person holding this position would supervise 20 Community Assistants. The key aspects of the area that this person would be overseeing are three Living Learning Communities and four common interests living communities.
Dakin Hall:
- 1st floor: Leadership Living Learning Community
- 2nd floor: Traditional Residential Community, co-ed by neighbor
- 3rd and 4th floors: Scholar Community Mallett Hall:
- 1st floor: Service Impact Living Learning Community
- 2nd and 3rd floors: Traditional Residential Community Stone Hall:
- 1st floor: Experience the Outdoors Living Learning Community
- 2nd floor: Traditional Residential Community, co-ed by neighbor
- 3rd floor: Substance Free Purington Hall:
- All floors have an Education interested based community Frances Allen Black Hall (FAB):
- Independent Living Community, no first year students.
The Area Director will work in collaboration with the UMF Director or Leadership and Service in support of the Leadership Living Learning Community and the Service Impact Living Learning Community and will have more of a leadership role in working with campus partners for the Experience the Outdoors Living Learning Community.
The Area Director will fulfill the daily administrative responsibilities of their area, participate in the on-call rotation, developing strong inclusive communities, managing student conduct and programming, assist in the creation and facilitation of staff selection and training, participate in campus committees and initiatives and assisting with summer housing and administrative operations.
Essential Duties: Student Life
- Oversee a residential area consisting of 4 residence halls, 600 residents and 20 community Assistants.
- Serve as the supervisor and support for the Community Assistant staff as they perform their duties surrounding community development, programming, policy enforcement, and administrative duties.
- Collaborate with the Director of Leadership and Service for the successful advancement of the Leadership Living Learning Community and the Service Action Living Learning Community.
- Take a leadership role in the success of the Outdoor Experience Living Learning Community.
- Assist with the staff training and in-services.
- Serve as the primary conduct officer for common conduct violations in the area of supervision.
- Assist with staff selection and training
- Actively participate in the on call duty rotation.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Director supervision of 20 Community Assistants. Two Community Assistants would have some level of co-supervision with the Director of Leadership and Service as they pertain to the Leadership Living Learning Community and the Service Impact Living Learning Community.
Qualifications:
Required:
- A Bachelor's Degree
- 1-3 years' experience in Residence Life and a minimum of one year of experience supervising paraprofessional staff members and implementing programs (preferably in a university setting) required
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively with all levels at the institution
- Strong computer literacy and competency, i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software
Preferred:
- Master's Degree in Higher Education, Leadership, Psychology or other related fields
- Understanding of student development theory
- Knowledge of legal issue in higher education
- Experience with crisis management
