Position Title: Custodian
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Building and Grounds Supervisor
Grade Classification: Non-Exempt 6 [$19.4471 – $22.6037/hour]
Shift: Second Shift
General Summary:
Custodians operate cleaning equipment such as a wet or dry vacuum, carpet extractor, floor buffer, safely use cleaning chemicals when needed, replace light bulbs, ensure security, and provide overall routine cleaning and maintenance of municipal facilities. Custodians must work well independently. Routine tasks are performed under the general guidance of the Public Works Director and the direct supervision of the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
The following are some of the typical duties of Custodians, and are not exclusive of other related duties which may be required from time to time:
§ Perform general cleaning and maintenance duties such as dust, polish, mop floors, resupply paper and soap products, empty trash, strip and wax floors.
§ Operate wet or dry vacuum, carpet extractor, floor buffer; replace light bulbs, perform routine preventive maintenance of cleaning equipment.
§ Set up and/or take down tables, chairs, projectors, podiums, etc. for meetings; ensure that offices and buildings are secure; notify supervisor of needed supplies and materials.
§ Knowledge and practice of safety procedures, particularly with regard to use of cleaning chemicals and equipment, ladders, etc.
§ Shovel snow from walkways; perform routine outside maintenance as directed.
§ Interact and coordinate with Building and Grounds Supervisor, Public Works Director, other employees, and the general public for overall effectiveness of building and grounds maintenance programs.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Performs other work as may be required in support of Public Works.
Skills/Experience/Training:
§ Knowledge of and ability to use cleaning equipment and chemicals;
§ Ability to work independently and follow instructions;
§ Ability to provide routine maintenance on cleaning equipment;
§ Commitment to safety procedures and departmental policies;
§ Ability to follow established operating and safety procedures;
§ Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with Building and Grounds Supervisor, Public Works Director, other employees, and the general public.
§ High School Diploma or equivalent;
§ Valid Class C State of Maine driver’s license;
§ One (1) year of experience performing building maintenance and cleaning tasks;
§ Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, endurance, dexterity and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential functions. Requires sitting, standing and walking for long periods of time; considerable kneeling, crawling, bending, climbing stairs and ladders; and the ability to lift up to 80 pounds. Work performed indoors and outdoors year-round in all weather conditions and may be called in after regular working hours to respond to emergency maintenance and repair needs.
