POSITION SUMMARY

Assists in the delivery of optimal patient care, comfort and safety by providing surgical services to surgeons in a Multispecialty Surgery Center. Primary location of this position is at Intermed, located on Marginal Way in Portland, ME. Secondary location is at Sewall Street, Portland, ME.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures that all equipment and implants needed/ordered are sterile and available for use, to include allografts and special requests in the medical record. Prepares for scheduled OR cases by preparation of anticipated instrumentation and implants. Assists in opening room for procedures and prepares table, instruments and supplies at the sterile field.
  • May perform delegated activities as assistant to the circulator by responding to the needs of the surgical team, maintaining a running protocol sheet, assisting patients into room, assisting with proper positioning of patients and the appropriate receipt and handling of specimens.
  • Assists Physician and Advanced Practice Providers with surgical preparation of patient by applying tourniquet, positioning patient appropriately in relation to surgery and safety to avoid neurovascular injury over pressure areas, application of electrocautery grounded pad over large muscle mass close to surgical site, and/or skin preparation with surgical wash.
  • Assists surgical team in gowning, gloving, and draping of patient from non-sterile position.
  • Directly assists surgeons by passing instruments and supplies at the sterile field and is responsible with the circulator for countable items at the sterile field. Allows for appropriate surgical exposure.
  • Adheres to all time out procedures in the OR: anesthesia time out, surgical time out and post procedure sign out.
  • When performing second scrub role, responsibilities may include holding retractors, sponging or suctioning operative site, applying electrocautery to clamp, etc., as directed by the surgeon.
  • Provides continuous assessment of surgical procedures to ensure patient safety throughout intraoperative phase; assures strict aseptic technique within OR cases and maintains surgical standards in accordance with AORN or surgery center.
  • Retrieves instruments from sterilization process; initiates use of OR equipment.
  • Dispenses medications and solutions and handles surgical specimen appropriately on surgical field and communicates to circulator nurse.
  • Documents intraoperative activity according to AORN and ASC standards and records equipment usage and charges accurately. Performs and documents all sponge and needle counts per OA policy
  • Assists in the transport of patients safely to PACU

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in the general maintenance, stocking and cleaning of the operating room, reporting any difficulties with supplies or equipment to the OR Manager and ensures all equipment is stored at the end of the day.
  • Reviews all documentation for completeness including but not limited to the patient record and patient charges, accounting for all supplies opened for each case and any other paperwork.
  • Responsible for maintaining relevant certifications, ongoing personal and professional growth and development.
  • Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team and practice meetings.
  • Demonstrates professionalism at all times.
  • Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment.
  • Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the operating room.
  • Is proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology School required
  • Certification by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and operation room standards and procedures
  • BLS certification required.
  • Demonstrated patient care experience in a hospital or outpatient setting preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors and other staff
  • Skill in time management, prioritizing and medical care coordination
  • Ability to organize and accomplish tasks, and have the flexibility to meet changing demands on daily basis

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Daily use of computer operating instruments; stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard and mouse
  • Light lifting of paperwork, folders or other general record keeping materials
  • Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, stationary/lap top computer, e-mail system, scanner, and copier
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently
  • Walks frequently
  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time
