Summary

TITLE:   Chief Medical Information Officer, MaineHealth

Reports to:   CMO, MaineHealth (primary); CIO, MaineHealth (secondary)

Position Summary:

MaineHealth is seeking a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) to drive system-wide innovations. As part of MaineHealth’s knowledge-driven organization, the CMIO provides physician leadership to advance the enterprise’s information systems that support excellence in patient care, research, and education.  This position connects the needs and perspectives of MaineHealth’s providers with the capabilities and expertise of leaders in information technology to advance clinical excellence.  The CMIO will create and execute business strategies that will make MaineHealth a national leader in maximizing the potential of modern information technology systems.

Reporting primarily to the Mainehealth CMO and additionally to the CIO, the CMIO is responsible to lead, inspire, and develop information and knowledge management strategy and implementation. Specific duties include:

  • Physician partner for the CIO in all MaineHealth Information Technology matters
  • Champions with physicians all major clinical information technology projects, including EHR implementation and information security.
  • Assists in planning and development of IT strategy.
  • Advocates for protection of patient privacy and the security of protected health information.
  • Supports various regulatory compliance activities including HIPAA, Meaningful Use, and billing compliance.
  • Represents the medical community to Information Technology and other administrative leaders on the selection, rollout, and adoption of new applications.
  • Partners with clinical leaders in the effective adoption of information technology solutions in support of research and education.
  • Champions electronic medical record and practice management tools.
  • Maintains an awareness of existing and emerging technology, regulatory, and market factors that have an impact on healthcare information management.
  • Accountable for the identification, development, and execution of education, training programs, and services to build system-wide competency in the use of electronic tools for patient care, quality, resource management, and performance improvement.
  • Oversees physician informaticists and chairs the Medical Informatics Committee
  • The Chief Medical Information Officer reports directly to the MaineHealth Chief Medical Officer and serves as a member of the MaineHealth CMO Council.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. MD or DO required. Additional Master’s degree or certification in Healthcare Administration, Medical Informatics or Business Administration preferred.
  2. A minimum of 10 years of hospital or outpatient-based clinical  experience to include at least 3 years in a leadership or management position involving clinical information systems.
  3.  Prior clinical IT implementation and support incorporating physician and other clinician workflow automation is required.
  4. Current part time clinical practice with active use of EHR preferred
  5. Fiscally responsible with experience developing and monitoring budgets.
  6. Leadership and organizational abilities, with ability for strategic thinking.
  7. Strong organizational and communication skills.
  8. Familiarity with informatics concepts relating to workflow, use of data, health sciences research, interoperability, terminology, documentation, decision support and CPOE.
