Job Summary:
Colby is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and has 28 intercollegiate sports that compete at the Division III level, and four programs (men's and women's Alpine and Nordic Skiing) that compete at the Division I level. The department also hosts a variety of club and intramural sports. Over one-third of Colby's 2,000 students participate in intercollegiate sports, and in total, nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities in the department.
The College just completed the construction of a new, state-of-the-art athletics complex, that opened this fall, and is destined to be among the best Division III facilities in the country (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZs5M0RVJ18). The 350,000 square-foot athletics center includes an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center with Maine's first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College recently opened a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of three gleaming new competition and recreational fields that are also among the finest outdoor venues in Division III.
The Colby College Department of Athletics seeks an assistant equipment manager beginning as soon as the position is filled. This is a full-time appointment. The assistant equipment manager will assist the head equipment manager in all aspects of maintaining the equipment room for the Department of Athletics. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date inventory records for all 32 varsity sports, utilizing excel and online databases; position may have direct sport oversight depending on experience
- Support head coaches in procurement activities to ensure necessary stock levels and work with head equipment manager to place orders
- Provide guidance on uniforms and equipment material, style, and manufacturer
- Assist in maintenance of continuous inventory of all athletic equipment and conduct seasonal equipment inventory for each assigned sport using appropriate, up-to-date inventory computer programs
- Provide world-class service experience to Colby student athletes
- Operate laundry services for all sports including, but not limited to laundering loops, uniforms, towels, etc.
- Maintain laundry cubby system which includes issuing cubbies to student athletes by season and updating lock combinations each season
- Oversee student workers and set the schedule for the laundry room
- Fit, clean, and repair equipment in accordance with NOCSAE and AEMA standards
- Maintain, clean, and organize equipment room areas and ensure proper storage of athletic equipment used in and around the facility
- Foster, build, and maintain relationships with vendors and sporting goods companies
- Reconcile shipping and receiving activities within prescribed timelines when necessary
- Maintain all student athlete records with regards to fitting, sizing, maintenance, and repair
- Remain current with evolving safety standards that are necessary to reduce liability
- Ensure compliance with all NCAA and NESCAC rules relating to equipment operations
- Support special event planning and operations as required
- Attend department meetings
- Secondary summer assignment to be determined
- Work outside of a regular schedule including frequent weekend, evening, and/or early morning duties
- Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework or post-secondary education preferred
- Experience with an athletic equipment inventory system a plus
- Ability to work a dynamic schedule with frequent evening and weekend hours
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office essential
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
- Attention to detail and accuracy are critical
- Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision, as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
- Valid driver's license required and must meet the College's Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
This position has significant interaction with college student athletes, coaches, and administrators.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Operates on courts, turf, grass, gymnasium, and training rooms. General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, movement and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Travel and early morning/evening/weekend work is required.
