About Us

The Monarch School of New England brings individuals with intellectual, physical, medical and behavioral disabilities into the mainstream of everyday life. In this nurturing environment, a comprehensively trained staff works one-on-one with each individual, uniquely integrating both education and therapy, to ensure successful transitions to school and to the community.

Over forty-five years ago, the Monarch School and the services it provides was only a dream of parents and others who were concerned about the lack of community options for children with disabilities and their families.

Parents, advocates, and concerned citizens came together in the late 1960s and organized a volunteer playgroup for area children.  In our archives, we have pictorial evidence from 1969 showing volunteers and children enjoying the newly initiated playgroup.  In 1974, the group sought and received formal status as a nonprofit organization under the sponsorship of the Gateway Association of Retarded Citizens.

The early days of the school were punctuated with re-locations:  a year in a church, then a move to a Lions Club and then back again to a church until 1986 when the school opened in its own quarters where it has remained for the last 40 or so years.
